QUICK AND EASY REVIEW OF THE LIMBIC SYSTEM

The functions of the limbic system include instincts, drives, needs and emotions, perception/interpretation of pain.

Amygdala - modulates emotional states and regulates affective responses. Common theory is there is misfiring in the amygdala which causes Bipolar.

Thalamus - relays sensory information except smell; and filters incoming information to prevent overload of the cortex

Hypothalamus - regulates basic function, sleep hunger and sex as well as temperature. Example is temperature problems in Schizophrenia

Hippocampus - regulates learning and recall and its associated to memory. Alzheimers damages the hippocampus.
